I most certainly buy small stocks through my margin facility (take HLX for example, bought in the last month. an explorer, generating no income, with a market cap of around $30m) and even larger ones that aren't on their approved investment list.

It's just a matter of how much collateral you have, and not pushing the envelope beyond what that collateral will allow.
