The AFR is little use. There are over 2,000 funds out there, they are not going to carry useful information.
You can get basic free information here http://www.morningstar.com.au/ but it's not very user friendly. In addition, just looking at past performance is not very helpful. Indeed, it is dangerous, because you need to understand how the returns are being generated.
You have to to consider what your aims are, what your risk tolerances are and then select what asset exposures you need to fulfill those objectives. Once you know that, you can then look at the various funds and select accordingly.
