There is always possibility of variation or extra work claim.
It has to be justified and approved by the client.

A lot of blaming one another will take place and the outcome is often unpredictable, unless it was agreed by both parties prier to starting the extra work.

As for the poor design work, i would like to know who engaged the designer, was it FGE or was it the client.

If it is FGE and they outsourced the work, they could always look at claiming against the designer and his/hers insurers.

Often this will end up in court and can be very messy. but its an option.
