A local US news site recently featured an interesting article on Buderim's Macadamia nut farm on Hawaii, MacFarms.
One thing mentioned in the article that I wasn't aware of was that MacFarms is the largest Macadamia farm in the world. The 300,000 trees are not grown in soil but in lava rock, shown in this picture below:
The article does serve to highlight one concern I have with this company: Their Macadamia farm is located on Hawaii's volcanic Big Island, so shareholders can't rule out the possibility that they might wake up one day to learn that a chunk of their investment has been consumed by fiery lava....
I'm hoping that some time in future, the company will buy some land in Australia and start growing Macadamia trees locally, or alternatively buy some local mature orchards (although that might prove expensive). If they were growing macadamias in Hawaii and Australia concurrently I think that might provide some nice geographic diversification.
