Dog blood bank puts out donor call Tuesday November 28, 2006 An urgent appeal for blood donors has gone out from Australia's only canine blood bank where stocks have run bone dry.
The University of Melbourne's Canine Blood Bank says it needs donors to help it stock up for the festive season when supplies usually run dangerously low.
Blood bank supervisor Dr Bruce Parry said at least 200 donors were urgently needed to meet the demand from veterinarian clinics around the country.
"At this stage we have no blood in our fridge - it is bone dry," he said.
Each donation can help save the lives of two seriously ill pets. Each year, more than 1,200 dogs benefit from the Canine Blood Bank's products.
Any healthy dog over 26kg, and between one and six years old can become a canine blood donor.
All dogs undergo a medical check from a veterinarian and have on-the-spot blood test to ensure the donor is fit to donate.
Donors should also be up-to-date with basic preventative health care such as vaccinations, worming and heartworm prevention.
Donations can be made at clinics across Melbourne, including Werribee, Sunbury, Greensborough, Rowville, North Ringwood, Moonee Valley and Mt Evelyn.
