Construction and property development group Watpac has entered a trading halt pending the announcement of a major construction contract win in Brisbane.

The Australian Financial Review understands that Japanese group Daisho has awarded Watpac the right to build a 32-level office tower on Ann Street, Brisbane worth more than $200 million.

Daisho, backed by Japanese billionaire Katsumi Tada, has in the past week sent several project managers to consider the 60,000 square metre development which is to be built speculatively, or without a tenant yet in place.

Daisho will be competing with Melbourne-based Grocon in the hunt for tenants in the Brisbane office market.

Watpac was unable to comment on the contract award.
