We will probably never know officially. However, pursuing other opportunities is more often than not a euphemism for being shown the door.
The other hoary old chestnut is "leaving for personal reasons". Then a couple of months later the leaver joins the opposition or starts a new business.
I personally believe that NEA is better off with Dr Newman.
