    Going off-grid is more expensive than just using batteries because you also need a backup generator for times when the sun doesn't shine for several days. The benefit of batteries is to largely eliminate use of grid power - i.e. have sufficient batteries and solar panel capacity to allow you to charge up during the day such that there is sufficient energy stored in the battery (or batteries) to last you through until the following day.

    Batteries would unlikely be worth it where you have any of the generous FIT tariffs (e.g. 52 cents/KWh in QLD) since you get more for selling excess capacity to the grid than you would save by not buying the same amount of power from the grid.

    For me, I only get 8 cents for power sold to the grid so batteries might make sense (especially when the cost of battery storage drops). I would probably not get lithium batteries, however, but Redflow Zinc Bromine flow batteries (good Aussie technology ).
