Ive no problem with you sharing a few thoughts at the risk of getting even further off topic Ill return the favour.
A couple of years ago i also looked at the cost of getting off the grid using...solar panels, batteries for storage and a good(read expensive) invertor so as to still be able to use 240v appliances, lights etc.
The cost then was going to be around $40k,with luck no replacement required for 7-10years! yes expensive!!.
I spoke to quite a few knowledgeable people and it turns out that, going "off the grid" is more environmentally damaging than staying on the grid. This is due to many reasons, but where do we start?
Heres the opinion section. In order to be less environmentally damaging we have to invest in these (what now turns out to be) more damaging technologies (solar, wind, wave whatever) so that more R&D happens. Eventually we will find something or some method that is less damaging sort of a 1step back to go forward,or more likely step 1 of a 100step process.
To keep our energy lifestyle and be even be just 30% less environmentally damaging its certainly a long long way to go..
