Roots have two technologies and they both work:
- Root Zone Temperature Optimisation (RZTO): Works all year round, the technology heats or cools the roots of the plants depending on the time of year.
- Irrigation by Condensation (IBC): Which is a closed loop, independent irrigation system which works by condensing pipes with cold water which drips into plants. Requires virtually zero opex.
The RZTO tech requires excavation and labour which Roots will charge for. They have numerous operating installations in Spain and Israel which show the product significantly improves crop yield. Case studies on each crop are published on their website http://rootssat.com/technologies/rzto/
The IBC product is still in its R&D phase although they have already tested the tech on two crops. Unlike their other tech, this can be used outside of a greenhouse in any humid environment which facilitates condensation. This tech was recognised by NASA their Tech Brief Magazine.
The outline of their business model states they will sell extended warranties on their pipes - they will last a while. From a farmers standpoint the economics certainly stack up.
