If I read it right then I think your analogy about the syringe is spot on.
As I read it you were saying that some guy (read: the auditors) discovered that a crime had been commited by someon else (read: our board) and that the guy who discovered the crime, not the one who committed it, was eventually jailed (read: fired) when all they had done was blow the whistle. If the auditors suffer any legal action, then are you saying that's even worse?
