I don't think that a scheme similar to the ACC is really a risk in the short to medium term:
- As croasian has pointed out both insurance companies and law industry are making money from the current set-up and have powerful lobby groups. Just take a look at how many politicians are former lawyers, Julia G used to work for SGH.
- The New Zealand system currently runs at around a 3.5 billion deficit which is offset by levies to business owners and similar. I don't think there is any current political appetite in Australia for imposing more costs on business, if anything I think things are heading in the opposite direction similar to the tax cuts in the US.
- There already are significant CTP schemes being implemented in Aus and fraud is not as big a issue as it was in the UK.
- At any rate, the current system in NZ took decades to develop into its current form- so plenty of time to bail out of SHJ if need be.
