An avg aussie all electric home uses a minimum of 20kwh of electricity a day, every day - check your bill.
The avg PV solar panel install is 1.5 - 3kw.
To get you through 5 straight days of clouds and rainy weather you need to store at least 60kwh, theoretically 100kwh.
The PV install needs to be a minimum of 15kw. Each panel is 250w and they measure 1m x 1.6m. So you need at least 60 panels that take up a roof space of 96sqm facing toward the sun. Most houses just don't have that much available flat roof space due to hips and valleys and size. Check Google Earth and look for panels and count them.
So how much is that going to cost even if you had the roof space and the storage space for the batteries?
Probably around $70 - 80K.
Secondly though, if Ausgrid aren't connecting any more new properties how will they make money?
Maybe they are going to run gas to all the new houses and use fuel cells - doubt that as well.

As for costs. I have gas but my electricity bill costs me about $3 a day. You can't buy a cup of coffee for that. Cheap!
