Hydrogen is front and centre of a $1 billion federal
Labor plan to boost Australia's renewable energy industry.The funding would go to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to support clean hydrogen development.The emerging industry could be worth $10 billion in 20 years and create 16,000 new jobs in regional Australia, the opposition says.
A Shorten-led Labor government would also establish a $10 million ARENA funding round for hydrogen refuelling infrastructure around Australia.Australia's chief scientist Alan Finkel has flagged the potential of hydrogen for its environmental benefits, as well as its potential to be exported to Asia as an alternative to gas or coal.Dr Finkel is leading a recently established working group to develop a national hydrogen strategy for 2020-2030.
