Suggest you could google "algorithmic trading" first. With ADI today it kept the "last sale" quote at 41c. This encourages anyone that wants to sell to think that 41c is the best they will get today rather than hold out for a better price. They are obviously trying to buy at 41c.
Large brokers do not pay any commission or only one commission on the total trades for the day so they do this with no cost. The trades are computer generated in most cases too.
