With all due respect, MK was too late to save Croesus, and may very well be too late to 'save' MON. I know I don't have a spare $15mil in my back pocket and persuading others to part with cash will be a hard ask considering the history of MON.
As far as Davyhurst goes, from what I understand, there was a very strong push to get ounces out of the ground first up when they simply weren't there - case in point, Walhalla Pit. Additionally a release mentioned low grade stockpiles, again if you are blending ore from several pits PLUS low grade stockpiles then you are asking for too much to get good grade. Buying ounces (via Riverina, Ida etc) is also a very expensive way to gain ounces. With the benefit of hindsight, focussed exploration (prior to cranking up the mill expecting to make bucketloads of cash) would have been a smart move.
With respects to Magnet, Harmony bought these back in 2001 from Hill 50 et al with their typical view of making money by cutting costs - from what I understand exploration & res dev drilling would have been hit hard to 'save money'. Yes the potential is there for finding heaps of ounces but at what cost to MON? There is significant seismic issues associated with Big Bell/Hill 50 I recall - even if they do chase the gold at depth, there will probably be geotechnical issues.
Moving forward, the sale of Davyhurst (a poisoned chalice, some may say!) and Minjar will leave MON with the Mt Magnet tenements, a pile of shares, and a lot of work to do.
Learning from experience at Davyhurst, the Mt Magnet mines should have a heap of drilling to PROVE the ounces, and have 2+ years worth of reserves before turning the mill over.
My disclaimer: We are all adults, and this is the internet. I don't own any shares, in anything. My interest purely stems from my studies in Geology and Mining Engineering.
