Kaufland, page-13

Not sure where Kaufland started, but on our (quite a few) visits to Germany (wife is from Germany) we have shopped in Kaufland shops in a number of towns where we stayed with relatives.
I was impressed with Kaufland stores and they carry quite a wide range of merchandise above and beyond groceries, alcohol and meat.
Much better stores than Aldi-sud (which is the Aust Aldi), but then (esp the new /refurbished) Aldi stores in Australia are 1000% better in their appearance and presentation than Aldi-sud and Aldi-nord in Germany. Checkout, however is exactly same design.
My recollection is that range is wider in Kaufland and bigger offering than just 'house brands'.
Would not necessarily agree that it concentrates on poorer demographics ---- may not concentrate on upper-crust demographics, but certainly popular with the average people as is Lidl and Edeka.

Will be interesting to see how they go, but imho, will give some competion to Woolworths and esp Coles (who in recent times, I am not finding it appealing to shop in --- both in range of goods, general store 'ambience' and the push for self serv checkouts).
