Basically this area is now the landfill site for Christchurch(30km away 2nd largest NZ city)
When the were originally doing investigations into the suitablility of the Kate Vally site, Geological surveys by Wellington geological engineer Ian Brown, claimed there was "widespread seepage of gas and oil from the subsurface over the area ".
"This 15 square kilometer surface feature was
found to have high quality oil seeps around the perimeter of the structure" This oil is Thermogenic-ie live oil.
this supports migration theorys from huge offshore prospects in the offshore area of this large permit.

TAG COMMENTS
"The Kate Prospect is the one we’ve been
most excited about, and now we have the
means to start exploring it,” Mr Cadenhead
said. “The 5200 sq. km permit sits less than
30 kilometres from Christchurch, the largest
city on the South Island of New Zealand. The
TAG Oil chief Drew Cadenhead on site at Konini, located in PEP 38751 in the southern
portion of the onshore Taranaki Basin.
Kate Prospect is a 15 sq. km mound that plays
host to a number of thermogenic oil seeps at
the surface, along its perimeter.
“Two 2D seismic programmes over the
crest of the Kate Anticline totaling 27 kilometres
were completed in the 2006 fiscal year,
and the data has confirmed the existence of a
larger rollover structure at depth. Using the
seismic data we are locating an optimal drilling
location which we hope to drill in the next
