Before I was demobbed from National Service, my "green" employer explained the advantages of staying in the military: free clothes, free board, lots of sports facilities, career path, excellent mentoring, etc. I opted to do tertiary studies. I had money saved to put me through more than one year at Uni, while staying in a residential college. Because of the National Service, I also received a bursary of 1 year full pay to continue my studies. That bursary paid for another 2 years in college and Uni. My safety net was that if I decided to go back into the military within a few years, I would have been welcomed back. I am grateful to the honourable way I was treated by the ADF. That organization positively changed my life in more ways than I can describe.
