The first thing every Geo packs in his field bag is his scribe (you scratch rocks with the pointy end)...guess what that has on the other end of it!? A MAGNET!!! Bingo. Google "tungsten carbide scribe magnet" I suggest next time you have one of your "catch ups" with CD you suggest he buy a few...
Now just imagine you were an exploration Geo for a day where you had to think on your feet and for some reason you forgot/lost your scribe...what else could be magnetic that you could use...? I know my compass I used to line the rig up with! The needle is magnetised, I'll run that over the core...also I wonder if all those black circle things in the drillers caravan on the fridge are magnets!? Do you want me to go on? I'll save you the embarrassment, while I drive 6kms down to nova and ask IGO if I can pretty please borrow one of their 6 XRF guns...
