Sadly, this is exactly the reaction of the West, a civilization that has forgotten who it is, what it is, where it came from, and what made it what it is (i.e. great).
This is a war (initially with what was once called Christendom, hallmark of the West...and all indeed other infidel religions: no one is safe in the Dar al-Harb - The House of War) that has been going on for some 1400 years, and in which Islam has been singularly successful, gaining 1.6 B adherents. Is it because they came bearing a better quality of olive oil from the Arabian peninsula? I don't think so.
Today, the sword is no longer required when fighting the West.
As Marx (erroneously) said of capitalism containing withing it the seeds of its own destruction, so the tolerance of intolerance may well lead , finally, to the decline of the West (much written about for a century now, but now within reach, as the West appears happy to just lay down and die).
Karl Popper said it best in his monumental and legendary "The Open Society and Its Enemies", 1945. It applies to the major issue confronting all of us today, just that the enemy has a different name. We note in passing the intimate ties between contemporary Islam and Nazism - see image:
