I think it's hard to guess why, but I think that they have so much data to look at now that they may not have fully intrepreted all data on their drills prior to spud, but they would certainly be focussed on this while drilling, and feeding new info into their model while drilling. Sometimes the improved velocity models can change the interpeted shape of underlying formations, and may make new opportunities appear.
Personnally I think they just decided to check it out while they are there and that this was simply a late decision, as they do need to improve their knowledge base as they go along.
