Seems like USCOM might have hit pay dirt, after a lot of very hard work, and the diligent application of good science. The paper Non-Invasive Doppler ultrasonography for assessing cardiac function: can it replace the Swan-Ganz?, mentioned in the latest press release, is an acknowledgment that the USCOM device can now provides, for the first time, an accurate means of measuring the blood output of the heart without having to insert any messy probes. This is a major medical breakthrough and these guys have the science stitched up and protected around the world.
Lots of other recent papers have pointed to this conclusion but this seems like the clincher, to me it is like successfully completing the final exam qualifying you for graduation.

Having followed with interest the enormous amount of work this small Aussie company has done proving its science it seems this latest paper in the American Journal of Surgery is the validation of the USCOM concept from researchers at the home of the prevailing “Gold Standard”.
I got hold of a copy of the paper, just to check it out, and the Conclusion says, in full, ( the bracketed comments are mine) .......
“CW Doppler ultrasonography (USCOM) shows promising clinical utility in current SICU (surgical intensive care unit) practice because of its noninvasive and portable nature. It has been found to be reliable and accurate in our study. It allows for accurate hemodynamic assessment without complications associated with PACs (pulmonary artery catheter). It should be noted that CW Doppler ultrasonography is limited to CO/CI, SV (cardiac output/cardiac index, stroke volume), systemic vascular resistance index measurements. Its noninvasiveness and short learning curve suggest that this device is a good substitute over the PAC for determining cardiac function and can be used by a wide range of ICU(intensive care unit) personnel.”
These carefully phrased words are as good an endorsement as you are ever going to get out of a research paper.

Seems to me good news travels fast. Also just released news of USCOM signing up the sales team from Space Labs medical.

There is a parallel to the Cochlear development in this – good science - careful steady work – careful attention in advance to patents licences and regulatory approval. Seems to me like this is about to blossom. Anyone know anything about Spacelabs or their parent OSI who announced Thursday the purchase of a block of 2 million USCOM shares?
