Nimrodel considers opening a new coal mine in Takatokwane
by Tshiamo Tabane
30-08-2012
Nimrodel Resources, the mineral exploration company, has expressed confidence that a new coal mine can be developed in Takatokwane area located in Kweneng District, following the drilling program, which has declared 6.9 billon tonnes of raw coal resources.
The Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) listed mining outfit last week indicated in a media update that the largest resource in the country was reported after the company recently completed the drilling program, which has defined coal deposits suitable for domestic and export market.
According to the update, the phase 1 and 2 drilling program, which covered 1km by 1km spacing of Takatokwane asset, has resulted with coal intersections in all 23 holes, “18 intersected the wider, mineable seam at shallow depth. Drilling over a small portion of the combined 6.9 billion tonne inferred resource has consistently intersected coal of between 10m and 20m thick from 60m below surface,” reads the update in part.
The company noted that the thick coal seams are suitable for open cast mine development and the portion under exploration will form the technical basis of a start-up mining operation.
The Company Managers in Botswana could not be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, Nimrodel’s Managing Director, Allan Mulligan, said in the update that “these consistent intersections of seams at between 60m and 70m depth coupled with a robust seam thickness averaging 16m over a large area of our target zone highlights the potential for Takatokwane to become a stand-alone coal mining district in its own right.”
He said the basic coal quality tests indicate that the coal can be upgraded to a calorific value of 21.2 MJ/kg, which represents feedstock quality for most coal fuelled power stations in southern Africa and Asia.
The Director said Nimrodel’s focus at this stage is on a staged program to quantify shallow and accessible coal for further targeted study work. He noted in the update that phase 2 drilling has increased the confidence levels of the resource and outlined an initial target of 200 – 300 Mt of the overall 6.9 Bt Inferred Resource.
The update noted that resource definition was calculated by independent resource consultant Analytika Holdings in Botswana while coal analysis and washability test work was carried out by Advanced Coal Technology in Johannesburg.
Nimrodel’s current focus is on two adjacent thermal coal projects in Botswana, Takatokwane and Takatokwane South, located approximately 195km west of Gaborone. The company’s other projects include the Lindi and Makete projects in Tanzania, and three Australian projects – Specimen Reef, Avoca in Tasmania and Buckaroo in New South Wales.
