Perhaps I have written too much about mitochondrion fusion proteins and not perhaps enough the main function of mitochondrion: energy production. For sure these relate to each other. In this paper by Huang et al demonstrate that over load of iron slows down the complex I activity and so energy production. Complex I is the main place where energy is produced by proton stream inside a mitochondrion. Some 30 ATP molecules from a single glucose molecule is produced by oxidative phosphorylation.
So if and when the energy production in mitochondria and supply for neurons will be hampered by gradual iron accumulation neurons start gradually die and neurodegeneration will develop.
But best of all in this paper was the fact that iron chelation reversed this effect of accumulating iron and today it looks like Prana would have a safe iron chelator ( now in phase 1).
