I don't think you are alone there Resourced. I think it is reasonable to assume what you are being told is accurate and the people executing the development are competent. You assume that people are maybe like yourself in their ethics and diligence. Well guess what!
I would like to know who devised "that trial", on what basis did it seem acceptable. We all assumed they knew what they were doing as they were experts being paid as such and with the added advice of all those expert consultants.
Maybe something can be retrieved from this train wreck, or at least there is time available for the lessons learnt by this life episode to be of some benefit. Unfortunately in life it seems you learn the most from stuff-ups.
Lesson (again). Trust your gut instincts, not someone else's words.
I'd also like to believe in Karma, but its a bit iffy.
