Large capitalised companys have values that are reviewed by many analysts,where as low value companys are too small for anyone to be bothered with.
If you find an angle or see a development then it is likely you are the only one ,or one of the few and have the opportunity to get in at a low level,for greater traction than say with BHP.
Some companies struggle to get traction,but have squeeky clean management and seem to be shareholder focused.If i use FML for example,because of the quality of its management,i believe it to be a steamroller picking up pace. As such a company gets stronger,its value starts to be recognised and its total value lifts it into a bracket where more people start to anayse its actions. Naturally,other things appreciate as well.
However,small companies are riskier,there are a number of unknowns,including manipulation that is supposed not to exist.
