Can buy decent local brews here for 2-3 CNY (~40-60cAU) for a 600ml long neck.

You're right though, China has a burgeoning upwardly mobile middle class that are ostentatious when it comes to showing off their worldliness i.e. drinking foreign beers with friends (local brands at home), swaggering their goochi bags and driving their beemers, wearing Disney t-shirts etc

So yes, there is a market, but many a coy has done their dosh trying to crack it - they go for internationally known brands - Budweiser is popular.
