METALS recycler CMA Corporation has credited improved maintenance cost management as one of the factors contributing to its return to profit. CMA Corporation is forecasting a return to operating profit for the first half of the 2010 financial year in its earnings before interest, tax and depreciation. The company says its success in reducing operating costs was a significant factor in its performance improvement. While the metals and recycling markets are recovering along with the general economy, CMA claims it managed to save costs by improving its management of labour, inventories and maintenance costs. CMA says it is now reaping dividends from its investment in equipment during the downturn. It commissioned three new shredders in New Zealand, St Marys and Ringwood, and these have boosted its capacity. CMA also expects its fully automated and unmanned processing plant in Ringwood to be commissioned within weeks.
