Actually you'll find that silver is mined very successfully here - Cannington Mine near Mt Isa is the largest and lowest cost silver-lead mine in the world.
The issue is CCU decided to take on Debt (NOT Dept) rather than issue more shares when the share price was high. (There are arguments for and against but with the benefit of 20-20 hindsight it probably would have been better to issue more shares - at least they don't have interest payments) And the start up/commissioning process is about 12-18 months behind schedule.
The feasibility for the mine was done and a per ounce cost for production was in the order of $12 an ounce, less if you count the lead credits. CCU is still a long way off (if ever) achieving that sort of cost.
Anyway, the stock is in Pre_NR right now - I expect some sort of resolution on finance has been made.
