Yea, i can see we could be an attractive target for a large overseas Telco, but it probably makes more sense if its a neighbouring country like NZ (shared network infrastructure) with close cultural ties (for operational reasons like marketing).
The US is similar culturally, and a lot of traffic goes that way anyway, but why would they bother with Aus, their own market is huge compared to us, we would be pretty irrelevant to them, maybe they would look to the EU instead (not that i know much about them)
If the TPG/Vodafone merger goes ahead, they will be majority owned overseas, and Optus is majority owned overseas. If we got approached by an overseas company as well, i imagine the FIRB might start to wonder about the implications of having only 1 majority Australian owned integrated telco. I imagine if it wasn't from a 5eyes country there might be extra security concerns. NZ would make most sense as we already have a presence there, and be most palatable to AU and NZ government.
But i really dont see it happening.
