"Above-the-line" is marketing lingo that doesn't have anything to do with financial accounting. In marketing. above-the-line refers to traditional mass market media advertising channels and below-the-line refers to direct marketing, often more targeted, one-on-one including direct mail, PR/trade/sales/in-store promotions, cross-selling to exiting customers, etc. See http://www.theadvertisingclub.net/i...above-the-line-and-below-the-line-advertising.
