Japan is Australia’s second largest market for beef, with exports totalling $1.6 billion in 2014 and we are their largest supplier. However we have been losing market share to the US over the past few years.
Prior to the discovery of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in North America in 2003 the US was Japan’s largest supplier and as Japan’s BSE restrictions have been progressively eased since 2006, US exports have been increasing and are now threatening Australia’s prime market position.
