That Geldoff brain fart to raise money through his "Live Aid" concert to send some food to a starving people was at the time considered ill conceived and would create more problems than solve...which it did.
You are right Bobbin, most of these charities begging for money to either "sponsor" a child, or help somewhere use a heap of the funds they raise for paying themselves first. It is a rort, and using photographs of starving black kids to tug at the heart strings is a typical ploy.
We know that in many cases up to 80% and sometimes more of the money raised by the rattling of tins pays the collectors and the organisation involved first.
A amazing woman I know started an orphanage in Kenya a few years ago, She bought a block of land in Kenya out of her own money, flew back and forth from her own savings to find local people to assist her. Raised money to build accommodation, build fences, etc etc.
Many of the issues she faced were from the local people who would steal food and other items...that along with zero assistance from their Government, merely hurdles and expenses as she tried to help their own people.
She would find babies dumped at the gate, babies would be bought in a few weeks old from being dumped in bush land as their mothers could not feed them, or had other "interests" other than raising children. Many kids of merely a few years old she has bought to her who have been abused sexually since birth and are no more than skin and bone.
Young girls in these African countries often don't even have sanitary wear for "that time of the month", and are forced to stay away from the rest of the people while they menstruate. Men are well known to accost young girls offering money to buy them product in return for "favours".
These countries are sick, their Government officials pocket most of the money coming in, they don't assist their own. Yet these countries are reproducing at often double the rate of Western society creating more problems.
Fortunately the organisation and people I volunteer with donate their hours to raise money to help these people, 100% of the all money raised goes where it is supposed to go. We also raised a heap of money for the Farmers affected by drought, and for the Townsville flood victims...
There are many ways you can help without being ripped off by these "sham" charities...
