This is what strachan is saying.....
Sacramento Basin gas field developer Sacgasco (SGC) has achieved a modest gas flow from the second zone tested in the exploration component of its Dempsey 1-15 well. The main challenge for partners in the project is to find reservoir units that offer sufficient permeability to support commercial gas flow. The Dempsey 1-15 well is located to provide exposure to a maximum number of target zones through the sedimentary section, but not specifically to optimise location for the best possible site from which to find and test high quality reservoirs. The deepest target zone (X4?) on the top of basement volcanic rocks, from which a gas flow was achieved, was intersected at the edge of a much larger sandstone unit that had been mapped on seismic. Although it showed poor reservoir characteristics at this drilling location, the small gas flow achieved will encourage project partners to test this zone in an optimal location to intersect a thicker sandstone unit that might deliver a more commercial gas flow in a location on the Dempsey structure where the sandstone unit is better developed. Despite strong gas shows while drilling, the most recently tested zone also appears to deliver gas at sub-economic rates on natural flow at the current stage of testing, with high reservoir pressures offsetting low sandstone permeability to restrict gas flow. Further testing at the X1 zone may deliver enough gas to warrant a production hook-up, while stimulation could be employed at a later date to improve connection with gas in the formation. However the primary target for the Dempsey 1-15 was the as yet un-tested G1 zone, where good gas shows were reported while drilling below 1,560 metres. Better permeability is likely to be found under lower pressure as shallower zones are tested in the well, but deeper gas discoveries point to a major discovery where stimulation could play a part in a commercial outcome. The shallower G1 zone at the top of the lightly explored deeper sediments has yet to be tested and represents one of the main target zones for commercial gas. Given the slow rate of testing progress in this high well pressure environment, final gas flow results from the shallower targets might take several weeks to achieve.
