HSBC chief economist Paul Bloxham said that while consumption growth figures released this week were lower than expected, he played down the link to house prices, pointing out that Victoria and NSW had the biggest house price falls but the strongest household spending.
"Jobs growth is more important for consumer spending than housing prices and the jobs indicators are still strong," he said.
