NT gas may match best US shale basins: Canavan

Federal Resources Minister Matt Canavan has used his address at the opening session of APPEA 2018 to call on industry to broaden its message to the public about the benefits it brings well beyond export earnings through LNG.
The Senator said that better communication about the contribution the industry makes to domestic fuel security could help bolster public support for the sector.
The minister told the LNG exporters that they had to look to the east coast gas market as well as to their export customers and thanked them for their efforts to increase local supplies.
He noted that gas prices at the Wallumbilla hub in Queensland were 27 per cent lower in the first three months of 2018 compared to the same time a year earlier, at $8.07 a gigajoule instead of $10.66/GJ, thanks in part to the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism process.
Senator Canavan also noted the federal government's ongoing review into liquid fuel security and to the "real challenge" for the country to turn around its declining self-sufficiency in oil production.
He also pointed to the Beetaloo Basin in the NT and its potential, which some say could match some of the best US shale basins. That could help alleviate the gas squeeze on the east coast, where current prices still risk seeing large number of heavy energy dependent industries go out of business.
"This is something we must tackle," he said.
He again called on states such as Victoria to free up access to their gas resources and to ignore the "ill informed and ignorant campaigns" against the industry and act in accordance with the science.
The Senator also announced the release of 21 new permits up for auction in 6 basins in Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia and the Ashmore and Cartier Islands. The bidding round includes areas in Great Australian Bight, which he said could be one of the most prospective unexplored region in the country if not the world.
He said improvements would be made to the acreage release system to simplify bidding
He also said there would be a return to a process where permits are awarded based entirely on the work explorers commit to carry out in permits, dropping a cash bidding process for more mature acreage.
The minister also highlighted the sudden deterioration in safety performance in the offshore industry, with 2017-18 set to have the worst safety record after 10 years of improvement.
