As you can appreciate, there are thousands of posts on HC each day so it's easy to miss discussions, but this is definitely something I have an interest in.
I guess one part of me is quick to cry foul, but I have read various commentaries which attempt to explain their benefit
I think what you are describing highlights a very fine line between manipulation and control for better execution.
I have seen many instances where a new order hits the market and the BOT simply increases the size of the next parcel to bring the price back down to "equilibrium" so that it can continue doing whatever job it was designed to do.
I guess I don't have a real use for algorithmic trading but knowing their place in the market is in important. It's refreshing to know that retail investors can actually utilise such a product and it's not the realm of the institutional trader
