Hive mentality that puts cyber stingers on notice takes Victoria’s top business award

A CYBER security business helping other businesses fend off increasingly sophisticated attacks has been named the 2017 Telstra Victorian Business of the Year.

Hivint, one of Australia’s fastest growing cybersecurity consultancies, offers a subscription service called SecurityColony.com that has chalked up 50 per cent growth quarter-on-quarter. It also took out the new business award category.

Hivint founders Craig Searle and Nick Ellsmore said there was a better way to protect businesses against increasingly complex and frequent attacks, through collaboration.

“We’re all at risk of coming under cyber attack and we need to work together to improve our collective security,” Mr Ellsmore said. “Hivint enables cybersecurity collaboration to share resources and solutions, rather than just locking them away.”

The Victorian winners in the Telstra Business Awards, now in their 25th year, were announced last night in Melbourne. State finalists will go on to compete in the national awards next month.

Showkidz Management, which manages talented children for film, television and advertising opportunities, took out the micro business award.

The small business award went to TM Insight, a business consultancy helping bigger companies with supply-chain, property and project-management know-how.

Founded in the wake of the financial crisis, TM Insight operates here and in Hong Kong.

Started in 2004, Marnie Goding’s Preston-based jewellery, clothing and accessories retailer Elk was the top medium-sized business.

Sleepbus, a charity that transforms old buses into temporary overnight accommodation for the homeless, took out the charity award.

Founded in 2016 by Simon Rowe — prompted by a chance meeting with a homeless person — the charity was kickstarted with a $100,000 crowd-funding campaign.

Telstra executive and awards ambassador Kevin Russell said the winners had demonstrated leadership in their fields and had names that were trusted and admired.

“The Victorian winners have all shown an amazing capacity to disrupt their industries, by anticipating social and technology changes that will impact people, businesses and the community at large,” Mr Russell said.
