My family were farmers. My grandfather had a rifle which was kept under lock and key and was used only under extreme circumstances on the property.
My father served in WW2 in Papua New Guinea. He was a Corporal who drove trucks loaded with ammunition. The troops were always trying to avoid land mines on the roads. One day his mate who was driving the truck in front of him drove over a mine.My father said "they were picking bits of him out of the trees in the jungle"
When I was a child, there was no talk of his WW2 experience.
He had seen the violence of war.
There were no guns in the house. The only reminder of life on the farm and at war was an empty shell casing in a drawer in the laundry.
There was no talk of guns or of any violent experiences.
Men who experienced war only yearned for a peaceful existence.
In times of peace ,how easy we forget these lessons.
There is no place for guns in our urban environments.
Responsible people who live on the land still have a rifle under lock and key.
AND
That is the only place guns should be allowed in Australia!!
