I believe graphemes can be produced from both natural and synthetic graphite (as well as some other types of carbon).
Why natural graphite is preferred at this stage is because it can be mined much cheaper than it costs to produce synthetic graphite.
If the Hazer Process is able to close this cost gap, you would have to think the disruption would be massive.
