Government rules out second airport for Sydney

    23.06.05

CANBERRA - The Australian Government yesterday ruled out a new airport to service the nation's biggest city of Sydney for the foreseeable future, saying the existing airport could cope with the expected increase in air traffic.

"The Government has formed the view that a second Sydney airport will not be needed in the foreseeable future," Transport Minister John Anderson told the Australian Parliament.

"The Government has no plans to impose a white elephant on the aviation industry in Australia."

Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport handled more than 26 million passengers last financial year. It is owned and operated by Southern Cross Airports Corp, which is 62.79 per cent owned by Macquarie Airports and funds managed by Macquarie Bank.
