There were good values from drill probes below the bottom (23) level back in the 60's but the gold price of around US$35/oz killed the mine. As the mine went deeper the gold bearing reefs changed from being fairly flat laying to sub-vertical which made mining simpler and more economical. Ore did not need to be scraped into the passes and miners could stand up in the stopes - they had gravity working for them.
