    Surely the colour could give us a clue? Are there any chemical engineers on this thread? I'd imagine the colour could give us a clue similar to the way astronomers can tell the makeup of stars by observing their colours. 

    I might be drawing a long bow here, but I think it could be a thought to investigate.
