Blockchain would only have an application in terms of providing a register of IP recognised by the relevant jurisdiction. The blockchain would provide irreputable proof that an item has been granted IP protection and that is all. It would not contribute in anyway to the legal issues around whether an item can be protected or not. At least that is my understanding of blockchain processes. Blockchain would not assist in disputes concerning violation of IP (except in so far as there has been a registration in some way). Surely the value of a patent attorney concerns the legal understanding of IP rather than to the mechnical registration once a piece of IP has been granted. Even if blockchain processes are applied to registration, an IP firm will most likely continue to be an agent for the process involved in registering the IP once it has been granted. However, this is really only a clerical activity and would be a very small part of what an IP firm is about.
If someone has IP and brings charges against another party on the grounds of violation, then blockchain could only verify that the IP was issued to the aggrieved party on a particular date but would not be able to give any input in to the arguments over whether the offending party has indeed trespassed or has actually introduced a new process/technology/creative item that is different.
