Agree, buying at these levels is a bit risky. And, if you look at last few days action, it doesn't make much sense unless someone (hedge fund) knew for sure another bid was coming. Big volume changing hands.
Or maybe it is NHC buying to improve their chances of getting the required number of acceptances for compulsory acquisition? Doesn't seem likely.
