    Thankyou for posting these classics NoBoDe - one needs a lifetime to get through all the stuff you post, but watched Oliver Twist tonight and it was worth every minute - saw bits of it years ago, not the lot, but remembered - and Ben Kingsley as Fagin was amazing.
    shall work my way through the Old Curiosity Shop next weekend.

    I am sure you know that Charles Dickens' graphic descriptions of the extreme poverty of many of the inner city folks, particularly of London and the state of the workhouses and the way orphans were dealt with eventually caused changes to happen; he woke the conscience of the middle-classes, the religious people and also some of the wealthier folks (who were his readership and also some books were serialised in newspapers) and better legislation was the result and conditions began to improve.
