To be fair, it appears it was Strachan himself that realeased a statement that was an attempt to lead readers to believe his reports predictions were based solely on a photo of the flare. One can deduce from that he was potentially quite worried about his livelihood after making such accurate assumptions. I’m not so sure anyone with ‘only a little geological knowledge’ would ever be that ‘on the money’ from the information that was publicly available at the time...

Agreed though, the rest of agents spouting has been a more little pessimistic than most would deduce from perceptively positive announcements.
