Exclusive: 25 rivers die in four states
WHAT's worse then, are we just aware of the environment, restoring contaminated areas or rivers? So far, 25 rivers are 16 rivers in Johor, five in the Klang Valley, three in Penang and one in Malacca are categorized as Class Five, which is a severe pollution, making the total of 32 rivers listed in the Class Four and Class Five categories.
In the exclusive interview of BH Sunday, JUNITA MAT RASID with the Minister of Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment (MESTECC), Yeo Bee Yin, who shared concerns about river pollution in the country.

Q: YB can (you) identify how many of our rivers have been polluted and ranked in Class Five the worst pollution?
A: There are many Five Class rivers in three states namely Johor, Selangor and Penang. All the richest (but) rugged states in Class Five are dirty. These three states only have rivers at Level Five. There are 25 Class Five streams in these three states.

Q: The Five Class River is considered the worst pollution, and is thought to be a deadly river. How to deal with it, how much will it cost to recover?
A: It's hard to clean the river. Clean the river not my jurisdiction but under Dr. Xavier Jayakumar (Water Ministry, Land and Natural Resources) but to see the existing technology it will cost great. That's why we need to avoid pollution. When it is contaminated, it is very difficult (to recover).

S: The Malaysian Academy of Sciences Agency has an interest in attracting Malaysian scientists to contribute to science and technology research in Malaysia. Can (you) share more of the changes and roles to be done ?.

(Yeo): This year we will have an initiative that the government will share research with private companies. We target 100 MESTECC researchers placed in the industry, not paying the salary (due) under MESTECC but will use the researcher. Our target is two, first to help the company with our researchers and the second so that researchers know what the demand is, what the industry needs in order to do its own shocking, wasteful, economical research. They (researchers) have to understand the industry and the market. We will also make other programs so that government researchers can get closer to the industry so there is a connecting bridge.
    ..........
It is important for us to have a social media communication plan and mass media to tell about the environment, climate change. This (recycling and environment) is under the three ministries namely KPKT, MESTECC and the Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources. Three ministries that make campaign awareness but for MESTECC we are more about social media and mass media.
