I wouldn’t consider shorts @ 3.38% as “heavily shorted”.

From what I see, the Van Eck Rebalance did a lot of damage to goldies in the GDX & GDXJ for that matter earlier this year.
The lack of any substantial movement in POG has done the rest : it’s been trading in a range for a while now, & has failed at overcoming the US$1,300 resistence.
US and other overseas investors, including hedge funds etc move Aussie goldies more so than local traders, and no one seems too interested in gold or gold miners at the moment.
Most goldies are in a painfil holding pattern... All in my opinion...
